Trapped with your worst enemy in a storm...and it's getting hot in here...

Synopsis

Rookie firefighter Gabby Luis never thought she'd see the arrogant jerk who tormented her in high school ever again - Oak Shaw. It's been ten years, but even his hot military uniform isn't enought to convince her he's changed.

Lieutenant Commander Oak Shaw plans on grabbing a cup of coffee when he runs into Gabby all grown up. She hates his guts, never knowing the secret he's hidden for a decade. Forced to shelter together in a growing storm, those feelings he's ignored are about to break free...

Chapter One: A Look Inside

Gabby waved a hand in front of her face, hoping he would disappear from the coffee shop.

Nope, he was still there.

The Oak Shaw. He was taller than she remembered from the last time they'd seen each other. Nor had he been wearing a crisp, clean, officer uniform from the Navy. It was a big step up from the greasy coveralls he'd been in at the time—which he had used to ruin her cheerleading uniform back in sophomore year.

The uniform also explained his short brown crewcut. Lots of the guys at the fire academy had opted for the same.

Not her. She was not going bald for a new job, even if her mom and other female firefighters had suggested a trim of her long brown hir.

"Really, Gigli?" he repeated her much despised nickname. He’d started calling her that as a joke on the terrible Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez movie of the same name.

"Oak. Right. Been a while." She seized her drink. This guy had never hidden his disdain for her during the two years of high school they'd shared. She had no intention of catching up on old times with him. "Good to see you. I've got to go."

"Have it your way, Gigli," he grumbled. "Good to see you too."

She spun back around, trying not to string in any Spanglish. "For the record, guy whose parents named his whole family after trees, my name is Gabriella. Not Gigli, not Gibs, not Gaggy, not Giggles, not Giggly, or any other version you tried out.”

“So ‘no’ on Gigli?”

“Do I look like J-Lo to you?” Gabby put her free hand on her hip, clutching the coffee with her other.

His hazel eyes swept her from head to toe, and she hated how after almost a decade, it still made her shiver. “You look more like her now than you did back then.”

“Are you suggesting I was fat in high school?”

“No, I’m not suggesting anything.”

“Oh.”
Then his face took on an expression identical to the one used in high school when he’d decided to mock her. “I’m saying in high school you were a shrill, bitchy, pod person, so this is an improvement.”

“I should dump this entire drink on you because while you might be serving our country, it obviously hasn’t matured you any.”

“Should I call the police on her?” the clerk asked tremulously from the back.

Both Gabby and Oak snapped their heads in her direction and both barked. “No!”

They likely would have continued bickering except both of their phones went off with a high-pitched warble of the emergency broadcast system.

'This is an EMERGENCY WEATHER WARNING for all of Cuyahoga County. There is a tornado warning. Please seek shelter. Remain indoors. Avoid windows.
